Paris Fashion Week: Bollywood meets PopArt in Paris

he Indian designer, Manish Arora, a former star of London Fashion Week, made his Paris debut on Sunday with a collection as dazzling and colorful as a Bollywood movie.Arora, 35, who staged one of the opening shows on the Paris prêt-a-porter calendar, dressed his models in kaleidoscopic embroideries, glittering beadwork and technicolor imagery reminiscent of this month’s Hindu festivals, the Durga Puja and the Ganesh Chaturvadi. One dress, handmade from sequined jigsaw pieces of Swarovski crystals, featured the elephant god, Ganesh. Other jackets, tunics and trousers were applied in silk and crystals with fantasy imagery inspired by a blend of Indian comic books, - Amar Chitra Katha – and the PopArt of the American painter, Roy Lichstenstein.A jacket and shorts ensemble was hand-beaded with a game of snakes and ladders. Metallic henna-ed hands were emblazoned on a white silk shift.Elsewhere, in a nod to the French ready-to-wear federation, which invited him to show in Paris, he showed designs featuring intricate, appliqués of the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, Montmartre and the pavement café scene. The finale ensemble was a long dress with six foot train, completely covered with 1,500 hand-embroidered and beaded butterflies, which glowed in the dark.

Why Buying Lingerie is Easier Online

It happens; even the best lingerie wears out. So you have to make a day to go try on some more. You need a baby-sitter first of course; otherwise the baby or toddler will be sure start crying for attention just when you are in a state of undress in the fitting room. Having teed up your mother or sister to baby-sit, you then need to actually get in the car and go - and find a parking space. Might as well get the groceries while you're at it.
So you finally get into the store and choose some lingerie to take to the fitting room. But maybe you've put on a bit of weight. You don't actually realize this until you are undressed and struggling into that lingerie. So you need to get dressed again and go choose a larger size. When you get back to the fitting room, someone else is in it and all the others are full, so you have to wait. You check the time because your baby-sitter can only stay for two hours.
Wait; there's an easier way. Do without the baby sitter and the hassle of finding a car park. Shop online. All you need is a tape measure and a spare half hour while the baby is having his nap. You can choose the right size, colour and style to suit you and pay with your credit or debit card. And you can do it all while you sit back and enjoy your favourite coffee. If by some chance it's not right, you can drop it in the mail for a return. What could be simpler?

Bridal Fashion Jewelry

The bride is the center of attraction on her wedding day and it is important for her to look her best on that special occasion. Therefore bridal jewelry, chosen tastefully and worn properly, will surely add complement to her wedding dress and make her look as beautiful as any bride should be.
Jewelry refers to ornaments worn by persons, typically made with gems and precious metals. Jeweleries worn symbolize the events, the culture, quality and the temperament of the wearer. For instance jewelry, particularly made with precious materials, is generally considered valuable and desirable and the rest are less expensive and are called costume jewelry. It can also be symbolic, as in the case of Christians wearing a crucifix in the form of jewelry, or, as is the case in many Western cultures, married people wearing a wedding ring. Whatever be the reason or events bridal jewelry needs extra attention.
Bridal jewelry can include old piece of jewelry that had once been owned by his mother, grandmother, or past brides in his family or can be from the collection of new or both can be used judiciously. Antique jewelry that has been passed down to brides in the family from generation to generation would reinforce a sense of family, tradition and continuity in a wedding ceremony. And if the bride prefer to go for the latest jewelry then there are thousands of bridal jewelry stores, both the Internet e-commerce sites and bricks-and-mortar stores, offering a dazzling array of accessories to make the bride shine on her wedding day.
And what can add additional sparkle on the wedding ceremony more than a diamond? Diamonds are ranked by four characteristics: cut, carat (weight), clarity, and color that determine the worth of a diamond. Watch out for the better-proportioned facets that are responsible for the sparkle. Carat is another important characteristic feature of a diamond. A carat means 100 points and 5 carats make a gram. And the last is the clarity. The color of the diamond ranges from D-X for white and yellow diamonds but one can also find green, pink, red, blue and brown diamonds that are usually treated to bring the variety. Not to be duped while making a purchase for the diamond jewelry and get the true value for your money does not overlook the fine print. Diamonds are sometimes filled with glass to camouflage the inclusion and make them appear clearer which can be damaged by heat, ultrasonic cleaning, and by re-tipping. Store your diamond jewelry with precious care because they are brittle and get damaged if handled roughly.

Fashion partners involved in catfight

In what could shape up to be a major cat fight on the catwalk, a prominent fashion duo, brother and sister Errol and Gloria Arendz, are embroiled in a Cape High Court battle over the way in which Errol has been running the business. His sister and business partner, Gloria Arendz Theiler, who lives in Switzerland with her husband Rolf, alleges that Arendz has excluded her from the business and made decisions behind her back.Theiler wants to investigate the manner in which Arendz has been conducting the business while she was away, but claims he has refused to give chartered accountant Nathan Sarembock access to the records he requires.Theiler said in an affidavit that she and Arendz had built up the business since 1977, with her brother as the creative force. She said she conducted the administration and public relations for the business. She described it as a partnership in the guise of a close corporationErrol Arendz Fashion Designer cc was incorporated in 1986 and took over the business, in which she holds a 35 percent member's interest and Arendz 65 percent. She described it as a partnership in the guise of a close corporation.Theiler says she spends most of her time in Switzerland and is concerned about the manner in which the business is being run.The situation has led to tension, she said, adding that Arendz had stopped all her payments and benefits.Theiler also said Arendz had, without her knowledge, started a business called EACB Studio, and sold Errol Arendz-labelled shoes to Edgars stores.

She appointed Sarembock to investigate the situation, but Arendz has allegedly refused to allow him access to records.
She added that the court should lay down an appropriate period for Arendz or the cc to purchase her member's interest or be wound up.Winding up the business would be a last resort, she said.Theiler has asked the court to order that Sarembock be granted unlimited access to the books and financial records and that Arendz or the cc acquire her member's interest or be wound up.Arendz has indicated that the application would be opposed. He has asked that Theiler provide R250 000 as security for costs because she lives in Switzerland and doesn't have any property in South Africa.Acting Judge Michael Donen has postponed the application to November 27 and set a timetable for the filing of papers.Arendz has undertaken to give Sarembock access to the information he requires.

Fashion bad news for snakes

LONDON - Style never stands still, and this season the super-rich have a new fixation: snakeskin.Whether on Jimmy Choo shoes or Zagliani bags, scales are adorning autumn's finest accessories, and London department stores have stocked up with record quantities of snakeskin for autumn. They are taking their inspiration from the stars of the screen and the catwalk. For where the likes of fashion luminaries Jennifer Lopez and Eva Longoria lead, mere mortals clamour to follow.J-Lo's passion was a metallic python number by Zagliani, an Italian company that injects its skins with Botox for that ultra-soft feel, while Longoria, star of Desperate Housewives, prefers an exotic python tote by Prada.Harvey Nichols expects its Zagliani bags to be much in demand despite a ?1280 ($3400) price tag.It has also added new names renowned for their use of snakeskin, such as Devi Kroell.Animal campaigners are outraged that exotic skins are making a comeback.Reptile experts warn that fashion houses are threatening the future of many species.Clifford Warwick, of the Animal Protection Agency, said snakes caught in the wild were nailed to a tree and skinned alive, taking days to die.

NOMINEES OF LA FASHION AWARD ANNOUNCED

Members of the Los Angeles fashion community converged on the Standard Hotel in West Hollywood last night to find out (as Heidi Klum might say) "who's in and who's out" of the running for the third annual L.A. Fashion AwardsAnd even though The Mirror's home team, the Los Angeles Times Image section, had signed on as a media sponsor for the event, we weren't tipped off ahead of time, so we trekked over to the Standard's poolside patio to sip mojitos and wait for the names to be announced. We're glad we did, because it gave The Mirror a chance to catch up with retail legend (and nominee) Fred Segal, who was holding court at a table in the back with his daughter Sharon and assorted members of the fashion press. It had been reported that Segal was planning to open a Las Vegas outpost of his eponymous retail concept at the W project, but he said a change in management had derailed that project. Instead, he said, he is focusing his energy on writing two books. One is an autobiography. ("I invented hip-huggers," he told The Mirror. "And stone wash.") The other is a collection of inspirational stories that include contributions from the Dalai Lama and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.Though we could have listened to the retail titan wax on all evening, we needed to shuffle off to the other end of the patio, where the nominees for this year's awards were being announced. The nominees for the Moss Adams Fashion Innovator award are Jasmin Shokrian, Juan Carlos Obando, Rami Kashou and Thomas Wylde (Paula Thomas, designer). In the marketing excellence category, the nominees are BCBG Max Azria, Guess by Marciano, Kitson and L.A. Eyeworks.American Rag Cie, Fred Segal, Lisa Kline and The Way We Wore will face off for the honor of fashion retailer of the year. The Los Angeles edition of DailyCandy will be awarded the Fashion Communication award, and Bravo's "Project Runway" is slated to take home the Inspiration Award. The Wells Fargo Century Fashion Achievement Award will be bestowed on Max Azria of the BCBG Max Azria Group. The awards ceremony will take place Oct. 26 at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown L.A.

Fashion Designer A Model Choice

MELBOURNE City Council has selected the new face of its fashion festival, two weeks after dumping its original choice because she was too young.Jacqui Alexander, an 18-year-old model and fashion designer, will become the public face of Fashion Week, which starts on September 3.Fifteen-year-old model Claire Quirk was originally chosen for the job but then dropped because councillors considered her too young.Ms Alexander, the daughter of Russian fashion designers who moved to Australia in the 1980s, designed her first collection last year while completing Year 12.Earlier this year, Ms Alexander became the youngest ever designer to have her work bought by prestigious British department store Harvey Nichols.Ms Alexander could not be reached for comment last night.Councillor Fiona Snedden, who chairs the council's business committee, said she was ecstatic that Ms Alexander had been chosen. "It's a fantastic result for Melbourne because Jacqui is so inspiring," Cr Snedden said."She's a stunning young woman, but also an innovative young designer with a thriving small business of her own."It's a great small business story. She will be a great role model for young Melburnian women."Melbourne City Council last month reversed its plan for Ms Quirk to be crowned "the face" of Fashion Week.Ms Quirk, who turns 16 during the festival, will still appear on catwalks at many of the festival's 142 events. The move to drop Ms Quirk last month came just days after an interim report was released by the British fashion industry's Model Health Inquiry. It recommended banning models aged under 16 from London Fashion Week. The British report also called for a scientific study into the prevalence of eating disorders among fashion models, and an investigation into whether a minimum body-mass index requirement should be introduced for London Fashion Week models. The measure has already been adopted by Madrid Fashion Week.Australia's main fashion industry body supported the restrictions on models younger than 16 working at big fashion shows, saying younger teenagers were ill-equipped to face issues such as sexualisation, alcohol and rejection.

Lohan's Not Lost it

Her life may be in turmoil, but Lindsay Lohan is not one to let things get in the way of fashion. Arrested after an alcohol-fueled pursuit of the mother of her former personal assistant on the streets of Santa Monica, and charged with two misdemeanors as well as two charges of cocaine possession, it's looking more and more likely she could be facing jail time. Prior to the incident, however, she kept the glamour stakes high in her usual inimitable style, spending her 21st birthday on Malibu beach in a Ron Herman bikini and blue Louis Vuitton rubber wedges, followed by a party with family and friends at a private residence. She was photographed shopping later that week at the Ron Herman store in Los Angeles, where she bought a Hysteric Glamour T-shirt that she wore later that evening (left). Now all she has to do is avoid wearing an orange jumpsuit, although we're pretty sure she could pull that off with style, too.

Pringle Pops

Pringle of Scotland may be famous for manufacturing exquisite knitwear, but come this autumn you'll have a reason to fall in love with the brand all over again, when the new accessories line arrives. Designed under the creative directorship of former Gucci and Calvin Klein designer Clare Waight Keller, the bags can be seen in the brand's A/W ad campaign (left), which will break in September, and which was shot by an A-list team including photographer Steven Meisel, stylist Karl Templar and make-up artist Pat McGrath. Says Waight-Keller: 'This campaign was like the collection itself, a lot about mood and texture. We found an old billboard sign factory on the outskirts of Los Angeles...the eccentric mix of the luxury cashmere handknits and the fragile charm of the models against a very urban, raw space gave a very impactful image.'

Luxury firms fight counterfeiters

For anyone looking to purchase the last Louis Vuitton styles at rock-bottom counterfeit prices, Canal Street in New York is the shopping destination of choice. The situation may be about to change, however, as luxury firms are joining forces to fight counterfeiters. Louis Vuitton Malletier, Burberry Limited UK, Burberry Limited US, Marc Jacobs Trademarks, Givenchy, Loewe SA, Celine Sa and Kenzo SA have sued a Chinatown landlord for trademark counterfeiting and infringement. The landlord, a Vincent Terranova, owns a series of properties on Canal Street where alleged counterfeit goods are traded. According to the lawsuit, the landlord and his management company had been previously warned about the illegal trading but had failed to tackle the issue. The firms are seeking a permanent injunction against the landlord and the maximum penalty permitted for each counterfeit infringement. They are also demanding that the leases be declared void and the tenants to be evicted from the premises.

The New Luxury

Each fashion season will come with its own must-have status pieces. Last season's Fendi Spy bag springs to mind, or YSL's tower wedges, whatever the item, they come with a hefty price tag. But this season a pair of expensive shoes or designer handbag doesn't cut it for those seeking true luxury.
In fact, A-listers don't want to be seen with anything costing less than £2,500, according to a recent report. It's no secret that luxury sales have been booming over the past six years. But at a time when the average wage-earner is grudging extortionate housing prices, high taxes and a meagre pay-packet, ostentatious splurging by the wealthy has risen to gaudy proportions as the super rich seek new heights in pampering, price tags and one-of-a-kind items that set them apart.
The over-the-top splurging has surpassed the days where a pair of designer jeans cost £100 and fabulous heels £200. The prices on luxury goods are scarily rising as stores do not see any consumer resistance to uber costly items. Missoni cashmere coats at £3000 fly off the shelves the week they get delivered. And Hermes Birkin bags having waiting lists of eager women wanting to spend £15,000, for the ultimate status piece. And so you won't be shocked to learn that £10,000 handbags and £900 pair of shoes (this season's Balenciaga's cyber sandal) is not unheard of. In fact, you can see them in glossy magazines such as Vogue and Tatler, staring at you from the page, screaming your name.
Even food items are becoming a luxury for discerning consumers. Where once Waitrose' steak tartare had your guests cooing at the dinner table, these days its hand-massaged Japanese Kobe beef served with heaps of truffle. And champagne? Only vintage from exclusive French chateaux bought at auction.
Better start saving now, dahling. 28 June 2007

Luxur brands Should Focus on Customers

Luxury brands should focus on older consumer
In an era of volatile economies, rising interest rates and slowdown in consumer spending, luxury goods companies seem to remain largely unaffected.
The simple reason being that affluent consumers continue to spend. Whereas the average citizen may find a tight squeeze on outgoings when the mortgage goes up, the wealthy consumer will shop as before. Luxury goods are said to have high income elasticity of demand: as people become more wealthy, they will buy more and more of the luxury good.
Even value retailers such as Argos are targeting the more affluent shopper, having introduced a range of goods that will appeal more to the middle-class shopper who has greater expenditure and would typically shop in John Lewis than BHS.
This is a sensible strategy, according to The Retail Bulletin, and one that could work equally well for other retailers as attracting senior shoppers are less effected by changing economies and rising rates. Older shoppers have been a forgotten demographic for retailers over the years but in tougher times this could change - especially with the number of older people predicted to grow rapidly around the world.
According to the IGD the number of over 65-year-olds will grow by 153 per cent in the UK between now and 2050 and will have serious spending power.
